A turbocharged four-cylinder engine is new for the 2012 528i model year.  This engine replaces the previous in-line six-cylinder engine. The new engine is more fuel-efficient than the previous engine, but it is just as powerful and produces more torque.

2012 BMW 528i Details

A 2.0-liter direct-injected twin-scroll turbocharged four-cylinder engine powers the 2012 BMW 528i.  This engine produces 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque.  Compared to the previous six-cylinder engine, this is the same horsepower and 30 lb-ft more torque.  This engine also prevents lag and optimizes performance over the rev range.

The rear-wheel-drive 2012 528i has an eight-speed automatic transmission. Fuel efficiency has been improved by a smaller displacement and an automatic stop/start feature that turns off the engine during stops.  The estimated fuel rating for the 528i is 22 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway.

The driver can control many of the 2012 528i's functions with the easy-to-use controller of the standard iDrive system.  The navigation system is an optional feature that comes with a larger display screen than the standard one.

The 528i's standard front seats are very comfortable.  Multi-contour front seats are an option for those who would like increased seat adjustability.  Adults will find that the back seats are well-padded and comfortable.

 

2012 BMW 528i Safety

The 2012 528i earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's highest rating of "Good" on frontal-offset, side-impact, and roof-strength crash tests.  This vehicle also scored well in testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  The highest score of five stars was achieved on crash tests for overall performance and overall side-impact protection.  A rating of four stars out of five stars was earned for overall front impact protection. 

The 528i has many standard safety features including antilock disc brakes, stability control, traction control, airbags, active front head restraints, and BMW Assist - an automotive roadside assistance and emergency communications system.  Optional safety features include a lane-departure warning system, a pre-collision system, a blind-spot monitor, and a night-vision system.
